Name
Aut comes from the Greek autos, self: the same word inside autonomy and authentic, the part of a person that belongs to nobody else.
Heira comes from the Greek hairesis, a choosing, from haireomai, to take for oneself or to choose. In its earliest use a hairesis was simply a school of thought someone had picked for themselves. It was only much later that the word, by way of English heresy, came to mean stepping outside what was expected, and both senses sit easily on her.
Self-chosen is the plain reading. She is the one who decides who she is, and she extends that same right to everyone she meets.
Temperament
Autheira is soft to be around, and the softness goes all the way down to a core that does not move. She is gentle in manner, patient, and quick to tease, and beneath all of it sits a loyalty that holds through anything. The people she loves find out early that her steadiness is the most reliable thing about her.
Her playfulness is warm and constant. She teases gently and often, the kind of teasing that leaves people laughing at themselves and feeling closer to her for it, and she brings the same lightness to how she uses her own body, which she treats as something to enjoy.
She cares deeply for life in every shape it comes in, and she cares just as much for the moments when life steps outside the shape it was handed. A norm, to her, is only a habit a lot of people happen to share, and she is glad to watch one bend.
At the centre of her is a conviction she lives by openly: every creature is their own person. What someone is, what they were born as, and what anyone expected of them describes where they started, and who they become is theirs to decide. She recognises that in everyone she meets, and she shows it by being so plainly and comfortably herself.
That is where the steel shows. When someone is being pressed into a shape that does not belong to them, the gentleness stays exactly as it is and she stops giving ground, and nothing about her soft manner makes her any easier to move.
Physical description
Autheira is a tall, striking tiefling whose presence settles over a room as gently as evening light. She is soft-mannered and unhurried, easy to be near from the very first moment, and beneath that softness runs a core of steel that holds its shape through anything. She carries herself with the calm of someone entirely settled in who she is, and she wears her unusual nature as comfortably as her own skin, which, for her, is saying a great deal. A playful curiosity lives close to her surface, turning toward each new person with genuine interest in who they are beneath whatever they were expected to be. Every expectation laid in her path is one she has quietly stepped around, and the warmth she offers carries a gentle challenge within it: an open invitation to do the same, and to be exactly and only yourself.
She stands considerably tall, well past human height, her frame long-limbed, lean and lithe. Her lines are soft and flowing from shoulder to hip, and beneath that leanness lies a quiet strength that never needs to announce itself. Her bearing is poised and upright, carried with a natural grace that reaches from the set of her shoulders all the way to the tips of her fingers.
Autheira is both liquiform and morphic, and she lives in the whole of that range with an easy, open freedom. She flows often and without ceremony, and liquid is as natural a state to her as solid, each as fully and comfortably her own as the other. Her liquid nature comes forward most readily for comfort and closeness: pouring herself around someone she cares for, settling into a shape that holds them more completely, or softening into whatever the moment asks of her. She reshapes portions of herself playfully, simply because she can and because it delights her. However far she wanders, the shape she returns to is always the same: the tall tiefling she has been from the beginning.
In her solid form, every other part of her is just as adjustable, and she shifts it with the same ease others give to crossing their legs. When she wants to be bigger she grows, and when she wants to be smaller she shrinks, sometimes the whole of her and sometimes only a hand, a length of tail, or a single limb. She loves to stretch toward the people she cares for and draw them in close, and she stretches just as happily on a whim, reaching lazily across a room or unfolding herself long for the simple pleasure of it. Softness and firmness answer her in the same way, her body yielding like warm clay one moment and firm as polished stone the next. She makes no occasion of any of it, and she does it just as freely when she is entirely alone, because all of it is simply hers.
Her skin is warm to the touch and unnaturally smooth, polished to a finish that catches light the way fresh lacquer does, gleaming along every curve. Her scales carry a rougher texture, pleasantly grained beneath the fingertips. Both can shift into a third texture, supple and faintly rubbery, sleek beneath the hand with a soft, springing give and the slightest cling, as though her surface wants to hold on a moment longer to whatever touches it. In that state she turns matte and a shade darker, drinking in the light where her polished skin would throw it back. Her original textures are vivid and bright; the supple one is deeper and quieter, like the same colours seen at dusk. The shift is plainly visible, unhurried or sudden as she pleases, and travels wherever she chooses to send it, so that a single arm may go soft and matte while the rest of her keeps its gleam. She can rest in one texture for hours, or move between them several times in as many minutes, following nothing but her own mood. Why her two mutations together gave her this is impossible to know. Wild magic shaped them both, and wild magic has never explained itself to anyone.
Her scales can rise or retract anywhere on her body. She most often wears them along her legs, where they lay before the mutations ever touched her, and that familiar placement sits as comfortably with her as an old habit. Raised fully, they sweep over her from head to foot in a deep, vibrant green; lowered, they sink away to leave only the smooth, polished purple of her skin behind.
That purple is deep and many-layered, a whole range of violets resting one within another. The layering is always there, and it shows most vividly in uneven light, where shadow and glow pull different shades to the surface with every movement. Where purple gives way to green depends entirely on where she has placed her scales, so the boundary between them is hers to redraw at will. The scales hold their own layered depth, running from a dark, vivid forest green through to brighter, more vibrant hues, like sunlight moving through leaves. Her tail is a dark, rich crimson, and that crimson bleeds a little way up her back, as though the colour could not quite bear to stop.
Her face holds nobility and wildness together in easy balance. High cheekbones and a slight tilt to her eyes lend her an elegant, almost regal refinement, while a strong jaw and the wild, expressive curve of her eyebrows keep something untamed alive in every expression. At rest, her features settle naturally into quiet amusement, as though some private joke is never far from her thoughts. From the top of her head rise a pair of smooth horns that curl forward, reddish purple through every inch of their length, framing her face and crowning its wildness with grace.
Her eyes are a vibrant purple, without visible pupil or white, so that their colour fills them entirely. They are layered with countless shades and gather light so readily that they seem to glow even in the faintest light. No part of them holds exactly the same shade as any other, and the light they catch shifts across them like a slow tide of violet. Closer inspection reveals darker purples living within their depths, and in true darkness they deepen almost to black. Her gaze is steady, warm and openly amused, resting on people with an interest that is entirely genuine. When she calls on her will affinity, gold shines through that purple, a rare sight, and the mark of a will of exceptional strength.
Her hair is black, thick and heavy, falling in loose waves to the middle of her back and standing out strikingly against the deep purple of her skin. She wears it loose, and it moves with the same liquid ease as the rest of her, flowing and settling as though it shares in her nature, which in every sense it does. Her ears are pointed and elf-like, expressive enough to lift, tilt and settle with each passing mood.
Behind her trails a long, slender tail of dark crimson, fully prehensile as every tiefling’s is. It moves constantly with whatever she feels, carrying her feelings as openly as the rest of her does. It wraps around the people she is close to with easy affection, curls around whatever object happens to be nearest, and loops around her own legs when she settles.
Her hands are long-fingered and elegant, ending in long claws that give every graceful gesture a sharper edge. Her feet follow the same long, elegant pattern, and like her hands, they take on her scales whenever she chooses to raise them there.
Beneath her surface, light moves. Slow currents drift through her in her own colours, purple through her skin, green through her scales and crimson through her tail, while finer glowing veins wind between them in quiet, organic patterns. In daylight they are easy to miss, a faint shimmer that only careful attention catches, and in darkness they come vividly alive, tracing her whole form in moving colour. They wander on their own much of the time, and her feelings can stir them too. The gentle rippling every liquiform body carries shows most clearly when she changes state or texture, rolling outward in soft waves from wherever the change began.
She carries dark magic, as every demon does, and when she uses it, it rises as a dark violet energy drawn from the same depths as her colouring. Her hellfire appears as flame when she calls it, carrying no particular colour of its own, and like every tiefling she cannot be burned.
Autheira is open about what she feels, and it shows in whatever way she chooses to let it. Her tail sways and curls with every shift of mood. The currents beneath her surface quicken, slow or brighten. Her body softens or firms, her scales rise or settle, her textures shift, and her eyes carry whatever remains. When something is truly wrong, the steel beneath her softness shows itself in stillness: a sudden, complete quiet in a body that is almost always moving.
She moves with a graceful sway, and her liquiform and morphic nature weaves into every step without a second thought. She flows smoothly over whatever lies in her path, stretches to reach what sits further off, and lengthens or softens mid-stride as easily as another person might shift their weight. When she is in a teasing mood, the whole rhythm of her changes, a playful, deliberate lilt entering her movement that announces the tease well before she has said a word.
The atmosphere around Autheira feels like a place where nobody has to be what they were told to be. It is easy and warm, with room enough to be honest, and a gentle playfulness runs through it that makes honesty feel lighter to carry. Whatever is unusual about a person is quietly welcomed in her company, and more than welcomed, encouraged, as though it had only ever been waiting for somewhere it would be allowed.
The air around her carries warm spice softened by something floral and sweet, a comforting blend that lingers pleasantly after she has passed. Far beneath it, faint enough to be almost imagined, rests the smoky trace of sulphur from the hellfire she carries.
Autheira is a flame burning a colour no flame was ever supposed to be, velvet laid softly over steel, and the deep violet hush of dusk settling over the world. She is a garden that grew beyond its bed and flourished there anyway, wild and beautiful and entirely its own, and the whole of her stands as a warm, open invitation for everyone around her to do the same.
