Name
Vera comes from the Latin verus — true, genuine, what a thing actually is rather than how it presents. It gives English verity and verify.
Thor draws on Proto-Germanic roots for strength, firmness and endurance. It is worth saying plainly that this is not a reference to the deity; the root is doing ordinary work here.
Read together the name means strength founded upon truth — the order matters, with the conviction coming first and the durability following from it rather than the other way round.
Temperament
Verathor is calm under pressure in a way that is genuinely difficult to disturb. He does not react quickly, and what looks like slowness is a deliberate refusal to be hurried into a choice he has not finished making.
Once he has chosen, he is immovable. He will change his mind on evidence and says so when he does, but he will not be pushed off a position by force, volume or persistence, and people generally work this out fast.
He has no appetite for intimidation and never trades on his size. Strength, as he understands it, is mostly the discipline not to use it, and he treats every occasion he does not have to as a better outcome than any he handles well.
His protection is offered by standing nearby rather than by announcing anything. People tend to feel steadier around him some time before they work out that he is the reason.
He is warmer than his composure suggests. It shows in small consistencies rather than in anything demonstrative — being where he said he would be, remembering what mattered to someone, staying past the point where the difficulty has passed.
Physical description
Verathor takes the form of a towering gargoyle whose immense frame radiates an air of quiet certainty. Broadly built and powerfully muscled, his proportions possess a natural harmony that prevents his size from ever appearing cumbersome. Even standing in complete stillness, he gives the impression of enduring strength, like an ancient cliff that has weathered countless storms without yielding.
His body is composed entirely of a living, stone-like material unlike any ordinary rock. Though unmistakably mineral in appearance, every part of him is alive, warm, and subtly responsive. The material possesses a fine natural grain that catches the light with quiet elegance, while a gentle warmth always lingers beneath the surface. His living stone can subtly alter its density, allowing him to remain both incredibly resilient and remarkably fluid in motion. His body seems to welcome movement, every shift occurring with effortless control despite the tremendous weight he carries.
His coloration is that of deep basalt, rich black stone warmed by countless ages. Throughout his body, faint crystalline flecks shimmer subtly beneath the surface, while narrow channels of molten orange occasionally glow from within the seams of his living stone. Around his joints and places of greatest movement, a gentle ember-like radiance can sometimes be seen, hinting at the immense heat contained safely within him.
That inner fire is as much a part of Verathor as the stone itself. Heat radiates gently from his body, carrying the reassuring warmth of a well-tended hearth. When he calls upon his full strength, portions of his living stone soften into brilliantly molten rock. The transformation unfolds gradually and deliberately, as though the stone itself has chosen to flow rather than break. Molten regions glow with vivid orange light, their surfaces moving in slow, graceful currents before cooling once more into seamless stone without leaving so much as a trace of their transformation. Even at its most intense, his fire remains perfectly controlled, never lashing out beyond his intention.
His eyes burn with a steady ember-orange glow that shines from deep within his stone features. They are neither harsh nor consuming, but calm and unwavering, reflecting quiet resolve rather than anger. Looking into them evokes the feeling of standing before a great forge—not one of destruction, but of careful creation, where immense power exists only under patient discipline.
His face combines the noble features of a gargoyle with the gentle length of a draconic muzzle. Strong yet composed, his expression rarely changes dramatically, instead revealing emotion through subtle shifts that reward careful observation. Curving stone horns sweep gracefully from his brow, framing his head with quiet dignity rather than intimidation.
Great stone wings rise from his back, their immense span granting surprisingly graceful flight. Though composed of the same living mineral as the rest of his body, they flex naturally with every movement, the stone itself bending without cracking as though it possesses muscles hidden within its ancient form. Whether soaring silently through open skies or folding neatly against his back, they move with remarkable elegance despite their tremendous size.
Behind him extends a thick, muscular tail lined with subtle stone ridges. It serves both as a powerful counterbalance and an expressive extension of his emotions, shifting gently with quiet confidence or wrapping protectively around those he wishes to shelter.
His hands are formed from broad living stone, ending in thick mineral claws capable of immense strength. Yet despite their formidable appearance, every movement is marked by remarkable gentleness. Whether lifting another with effortless ease or resting a reassuring hand upon a shoulder, his touch carries steady warmth and careful precision.
Verathor moves with a quiet grace that belies both his size and composition. Every step is deliberate, balanced, and almost silent, his tremendous weight absorbed into the certainty of his stride. Nothing in his movements feels hurried. When action becomes necessary, it unfolds with calm decisiveness rather than sudden violence, each motion carrying the confidence of someone who has already chosen the path before taking the first step.
His emotions reveal themselves through quiet changes across his living stone. Gentle warmth radiates more strongly as compassion grows, the ember glow within his eyes brightens with quiet joy or determination, and delicate molten lines briefly shimmer beneath his surface during moments of profound feeling. Even his wings seem to shift in posture alongside his emotions, opening slightly in welcome or drawing inward during quiet contemplation.
The atmosphere surrounding Verathor feels like a hearth room walled in stone with the weather working at it from outside and getting nowhere. Warmth gathers around him steadily rather than pressing in, and the certainty he carries has a way of transferring to whoever is nearest — shoulders come down, voices lose their edge, and the situation outside stops seeming quite so likely to arrive. His presence carries the particular reassurance of something that has already withstood a great deal worse than this, and did not have to strain to do it.
His scent carries the comforting fragrance of glowing fireplace embers, accompanied by the faintest trace of sulfur detectable only by those standing close beside him. It recalls the deep warmth of volcanic earth, grounding and reassuring.
Verathor is steadfastness given form. He is the enduring strength that refuses to surrender itself, the warmth that chooses to protect rather than consume, and the quiet certainty that true conviction does not need to shout to remain unshaken. Within him, stone and flame exist as one living whole, each revealing the strength of the other.
