Vulperin
A vulpine people of the deep void, who build living ships and mark their powerful.
Overview
Vulperin are a vulpine people adapted to the void: long-range travellers whose physiology assumes vacuum, cold, and distances measured in years rather than kilometres.
They have a homeworld. It is where their ships are built and where their ceremonies are performed, and almost nobody lives there — a vulperin taking up permanent residence on the homeworld is rare enough to be remarked on. They live in space.
Physical traits
Long-lined and built for balanced athletic strength rather than mass, with steady shoulders, a flexible spine, and limbs shaped for both endurance and sudden acceleration. The hind limbs are digitigrade, shaped for silent gliding strides; the forelimbs carry a more plantigrade structure through the hands, allowing them to grasp, lift and hold securely.
Height varies enormously and is a matter of genetics rather than of lineage or power. Some vulperin top out a little over three feet. Others stand nearly seven and a half. Both are unremarkable.
The coat is dense and velvety, functioning as a living barrier against extreme cold, and its density is fairly consistent across the species. Its colour is not — vulperin coats vary more widely in colour than the distant Earth foxes they share only a passing resemblance to.
Claws are luminous, and when extended, layered plating unfolds along the forearms — a natural armour of dense biological structure and contained energy that appears only when it is needed.
The markings
Vulperin markings are not breeds and not lineages in themselves. They are marks of power. Two of the three are held by families and passed down, but that is a matter of bloodline rather than of any division within the species, and the third cannot be bred in at all.
Most vulperin carry no marking whatsoever — just solid or gradient colouring, with nothing tied to lineage or deed.
Star markings indicate royal or warrior standing, usually both at once. The power that produces them, drawn from star-essence, is granted in a ceremony held under the stars, and once granted it passes to the holder’s offspring. It is taken away only when a majority of the population decides the holder is unworthy of it. Nothing transfers it sideways: the race either performs the ceremony to gift it to someone new, or decides someone should no longer have it. Because those are separate acts, more than one family commonly holds star markings at the same time, and vulperin authority tends to sit in a tribal or council structure rather than in a single crown. Both arrangements have existed.
Spiral, nebula-like markings belong to the lines of guardians, and draw on the magic of the sun and moon rather than on the stars at large. They are inherited the same way star markings are, with one difference in how they change hands: only the family being guarded may gift them or take them away, and the ceremony has to be performed twice — once under the moon, and once again under the sun. Guardians protect royal lines and the innocent alike, though royals carry that same duty; any royal vulperin unwilling to protect their subjects is considered unfit to rule.
Shadow-like markings, tied to the power of the void, are the only ones never inherited. They are earned, they never fade, and nobody fully understands what determines who receives them. They tend to arise from some great deed carried through in good faith, and the deed has to prove the vulperin incorruptible — which is a high enough bar that those who carry them are very rare. They are known as the Void Blessed.
The void grants three things. A Void Blessed vulperin can survive in open space without a suit, the magic simply holding the conditions off them. They can deliver far stronger attacks than either of the other two powers allow. And they hold a deeper connection to the ships than anyone else, to the point of being able to overwrite very nearly any command or security measure they choose to.
Magic
The three marking powers are the species’ magical register, and none of them come with the species — each is granted, inherited or earned.
All three are extra forces: star-essence, the sun-and-moon magic the guardians draw on, and the void. Extra forces tend to break the rules the rest of the system follows, which is a fair description of what the Void Blessed can do.
An unmarked vulperin sometimes carries magic anyway. Vulperin bloodlines have crossed with others before now, and power occasionally surfaces where that happened, though it is uncommon.
The ships
Vulperin ships are alive, and that is not a figure of speech. They are their own species: living, fully sentient beings with their own minds.
Vulperin build them, from a living metal that grows out of the homeworld slowly over a long time. The building is why the homeworld still matters to a people who otherwise live in space.
A ship is not a machine carrying a crew. It is a participant in the voyage, capable of attachment, and generally treats those aboard as its own responsibility rather than as its cargo. Some are very old. A journey is undertaken with something rather than merely in it, and vulperin consider the distinction important.
Shared instincts
What vulperin share is the adaptation to the void, the coat, the claws and forearm plating, and a way of thinking about travel that follows from living aboard a sentient ship.
They do not share a temperament. Some are open and playful, some are warrior-poets like Astrrhea, and plenty are neither. That range is the species; no part of it is.
Field notes
Individual colouring, markings, height, lineage and ship belong on each member’s own page.
A species of the same name appears in Blackwood Tales. The two are related but not identical, and where they differ, this guide is the one that applies.
